Monday 9 May marks the 127th birthday of the poet Lucien Blaga. On this occasion, the Alba County Library is conducting a series of activities.

Throughout the day, readers will enjoy a thematic exhibition, “Lucian Blaga in the Library’s Collections,” on the Foundation’s premises, where they will also receive excerpts from Blaga’s words.

Beginning at 9.00, flowers will be laid, at the bust of the author, on the Aleea Scriitorilor of Alba Iulia.

From 10.00, 4th grade students of the “Avram Iancu” sports school in Alba Iulia, accompanied by teachers. Mayor Lenuța Băra will participate in an interactive public culture activity entitled “The Basket of Smart Kids”. They will discover all kinds of curiosities about the life of Lucian Blaga. The program for them also includes a tour of the library, and at the end, through the “Games and Books for Children” campaign, the youngsters will go up to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, where they exchange books and toys.

The cultural animation activities for children, offered by the “Lucian Blaga” Provincial Library, can be accessed by teachers from all over the province, upon prior appointment, well curated for the moments prepared by the library team.

The events are organized by the Alba County Council and the “Lucian Plaga” county library. They can also be followed online, on the foundation’s socialization page, on Mondays, starting at 8.00.

127 years since the birth of the poet Lucien Blaga

Lucien Blaga was born originally from Lancrum, County Alba, on May 9, 1895 in the family of a priest.

He spent his childhood in his native village, “under the sign of a superstitious absence of the word,” as he describes himself, “the stupid swan,” because he did not speak until the age of four.

After completing his primary education at the German School in Sibi (1906), he attended the “Andre Agona” high school in Braشوفov, graduating in 1914. During high school, young Lucian suffers from a precarious financial situation, deepened by the death of his father. , in 1908, after which the whole family moved to Spitch. During this period he discovers the works of Schiller and Goethe, written in German, but also the works of Roman writers: Costache Negrozzi, Vasily Alexander, Mihai Eminescu, El Carragil, Alexandru Odobsco, Mikhail Sadovino, Octavian Goga and Nikolai Iorga, notes www.lucianblaga.eu.

After graduating from high school, he entered the Faculty of Theology in Sibiu, graduating in 1917. He participated in the Grand National Assembly in Alba Iulia on December 1, 1918. He continued his university studies in Vienna, where he entered the Faculty of Philosophy, receiving in 1920 the title of Doctor of Philosophy with thesis “Kultur und Erkenntnis” (Culture and knowledge). After completing his studies, he settled in Cluj.

He made his first appearance with lyrics in the magazine “Românul” (“Noapte poetry”, 1910), and continued to collaborate with articles and philosophical studies on “Convorbiri Literare”, “Gazeta Transilvaniei”, “Adevărul Literar şi Technical” and Cugetul Românesc”, “” Cuvântul” etc. The opening began in 1919 with a collection of poems (“Poems of Light”) and a volume of philosophical allegories (“stones for my temple”). Initially, the first verses were published by Sextil Pușcariu in “Glasul Bucovinei” and were later consolidated in volume The second volume of poetry “The Steps of the Prophet” appeared in 1921 and was awarded the title “V. Adamachi” of the Roman Academy. In the drama, she made her debut with the play “Zamolxe” (1921), which won the Cluj University Prize.

Lucien Blaga was one of the founding members of the magazine “Gândirea” published in 1921, in which he published most of his work, and between 1943-1944 he published the magazine “Saeculum” in Sibiu.

Prolific writer Lucien Plage has published several volumes of poetry: “In the Great Passage” (1924), “Praise of Sleep” (1929), “At the Water’s Edge” (1933), “On the Courts of Longing” (1938), “Unexpected Steps” (1943) and plays: “The Water Trouble” (1923), “Daria” (1925), “The Verb” (1925), “Resurrection” (1925), “Master Manol” (1927), “Children of the Crusades” (1930) Avram Ianko (1934) etc. Lucien Blaga wrote important philosophical essays and monographs: “Philosophy of Style” (1924), “Faces of a Century” (1925), “Dimonion” (1930), “On Personality” (1935), but especially “The Trilogy of Knowledge” (1931- 1934); “Trilogy of Culture” (1936-1937); “Trilogy of Values” (1939-1942) and “Cosmogonic Trilogy” (1940-1948), according to the volume “Members of the Romanian Academy” (2003).

From 1926 he embraced his diplomatic career, becoming a press attaché to the Romanian legations in Warsaw (1926-1927), Prague (1927-1928), Bern (1928-1932); Press Adviser to the Romanian Legation in Vienna (1932-1937); Press Adviser to the Romanian Legation in Bern (1937-1938); Ambassador and Minister Plenipotentiary of Romania in Lisbon (1938-1939).

On May 28, 1936, he was elected a full member of the Romanian Academy, and was reinstated on July 3, 1990. Appointed professor in the Department of Philosophy of Culture, at the University of Cluj-Napoca (1938). Since 1951 he was appointed head librarian at the library of the Roman Academy, Cluj branch, of which he became deputy director in 1954. He was entrusted by the Roman Academy (1949) to write two chapters of the “History of Roman Philosophy”. . In 1930, together with the poet Hermann Hausfirth, he composed an “Anthology of Roman Folk Poetry”. Lucien Plage left a series of translations for Goethe (“Faust” and Lessing (“Nathan the Wise”). His work has been translated into several foreign languages.

He died on May 6, 1961, in Cluj-Napoca and was buried in the cemetery in his village, Lankrum, about which he wrote poetry: […] To you who guided me / from the depths of the ages / in you who called me / blessed / a village of tears without treatment.
