Leonardo DiCaprio often talks about the environmental impacts of the projects he’s involved in, including this one, but it didn’t seem to me that Adam McKay’s movie would be environmentally friendly. It is more of an American “sadness” (2011, Lars von Trier), in which the philosophical and tragic poetry of extinction, as well as the existential problem of death, is replaced by a happy and absurd apocalypse, where no one believes what will happen.
Or it’s “Independence Day” (1996, Roland Emmerich) mixed with “Staging” / “Wag the Dog” (1997, Barry Levinson), a disastrous movie where Will Smith doesn’t save Earth, rather than the head of American politics who fails to forget power games and his interests With one foot in the hole.
The film is executed with full force by an important cast left to improvise by an ever more inspiring screenwriter/director.
It seems to me the most captivating film by Adam McKay, who has yet to show any special directing talent in my opinion (he seemed to be a better screenwriter than director). The fact that the shooting happened during the pandemic gave the team even more passion and motivation.
Jennifer Lawrence plays an MA student in astronomy who discovers a comet that will destroy Earth in six months. Together with her coordinator (Leonardo DiCaprio), the lead student goes to Washington to declare the disaster to President Orleans (Meryl Streep). But the chief has no time for bullshit, he’s in the midst of a porthole scandal, and when he finds out, he doesn’t believe it. As counsellor, President (Jonah Hill) Pizado keeps his mothers in check.
The astronomers then attempt to raise awareness of the state’s fourth force, and the invitation to a popular TV show by well-known and brainwashed presenters (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry) has been somewhat successful, because although the world prefers to make fun of an angry master’s student, he decides The president is taking measures to stop the culprit – of course, also for political capital.
Ariana Grande plays a dumb music star whose emotional ordeals are more important to public opinion and television than the fact that Tera will soon be gone.
The project started in early 2020, but Mackay changed the scenario when the pandemic started, making it look even crazier. Oddly enough, the movie was not originally intended to be a comedy. Good luck with the epidemic, otherwise we may have died of boredom.
A disastrous movie with a well-known ending must seem believable, which is why every progression of the narrative thread must be so natural that the viewer wonders: How am I going to respond if things are real? If the movie is also a comedy, it should play two purposes: to be credible about extinction, but also to be funny. “do not search!” He succeeded in this ballet on the wire, making us understand, when the laughter stops, that no matter how near the end, what matters is what we do now.
Here’s the feature of a pandemic that has given us another perspective on death. If the epidemic had not faced mass extinction, no one would have made a movie about the apocalypse at Christmas, be it a comic. But if you think about it, this taming actually shows how great fear can be.
