Less than 45,000 lei per year is the gross annual salary of a Romanian teacher at the start of his career, and after 40 years of experience teachers can expect a gross annual salary of close to 77,000 lei, according to the latest data on teachers and principals’ salaries in Europe, compiled by Eurydice Network and published on Tuesday. Ahead of the publication of the Framework Report in October of this year, the network presents, for the first time, in the form of open data, teacher payrolls for each European country – salaries for the 2020-2021 academic year.

According to the central information from the European Network, a teacher in Romania earns a gross salary that develops slowly, over several decades of his career, as follows:

  • Early in his career, a teacher working in a pre-school or primary school earns a total annual salary of 39,504 lei (8,027 euros). In middle and high school, a teacher at the beginning of their career receives a total annual salary of 43,397 lei (8,818 euros).
  • After 10 years of activityThe annual gross salary is 50,897 lei (10,342) for all teachers, from kindergarten to high school.
  • After 15 years of activityThe annual gross salary of all teachers is 53,943 lei (10,961 euros)
  • Maximum salary 76,991 lei (15,644 euros) – annual gross salary

This maximum salary is reached, on average, after 40 years of activityAccording to the mentioned data. Teachers in pre-school or elementary school receive a salary similar to that of teachers in middle and high school if they have a highly qualified education.

In real terms, Eurydice continues to centralize, based on EduSAL data, the annual gross salary reaches an average value of nearly 60,000 lei for the entire career and registers sharper growth in the first two decades of the profession.

  • From 25 to 34 years old: 46,140 lei (9,375 euros).

For an elementary school teacher:
