Three points, on the road of the future bike path, where you can see the history with your own eyes

The banks of the Shibin River undergo a transformation during this period. The bicycle path starting from the Strand district and up to Gușterita or the new bridge on the Alba Iulia road represents large-scale construction sites, with an impact both on the city and especially on Cibin.

Cutting the willows, strengthening the bank, and concrete in certain places where the new bike path will pass, all bring fundamental changes to Cibin as we have known it in decades past. But this transformation is nothing new for neither Sibiu nor Cibin. During the communist period, when the industrial development of our city took place along Cibin, many factories used water from Cibin for daily needs. Some remains can still be seen.

This first point appears at the top of the bridge construction site on the Alba Iulia Road.

“In addition to the role that Cibin water played in securing the water supply to the water treatment plants, which sent potable water to the taps of the Sibiu residents, it was turned into a heating agent by the major factories of socialism. Thus, on the right bank of the Cibin River, at the source of the bridge on the road Alba Iulia, there was an inlet for raw water, from which was fed the thermal station of the “7 Noiembrie” factory. Nowadays you can see the “little house” that houses part of the captured fixtures, explained Thomas Roth, author of works dedicated to the history of water in Sibiu, For the board tower.

The water intake is still visible, and it is covered with plants and graffiti

Thomas Roth spoke about Sibiu’s water supply and the role Cypinol played in the last episode of the Sibiu History Podcast with Rozvan Pope. You can watch the full presentation below:

Another still visible point of connection between Cibin and the Sibiu industry is at the entrance to the car park of the new Lidl supermarket on Rusciorului Street.

Below, after the Ferula bridge, a lower sill was made, with a small vertical closure, from which water was extracted for the combined thermal plant of the “Kazangiri” division of the “Independenza” plant, as well as for the “Amion”. Works made of reinforced concrete can still be seen to this day. Along Cibin Road, there are also water extraction pipes for “Tannery” and a brick factory, where water is used in the production process. These alternative sources of industrial water mean a fairly significant reduction in the city’s public water supply network,” says Thomas Roth, who specifies that he used in the documents information from Eugene Solomon, former Director of the Water Agency – Canal, within RAGCL, who also contributed to Writing the study “Apa Sibiului” in 2009.

Known today as “The Waterfall”, the water was extracted from here for “Independence” and “Amilon”

The third point where history appears, along the future bicycle path that will cross Sibiu, is next to the present Skandia factory, on Podoloi Street.

“Sibiu Auto Parts (IPAS) was a big consumer of industrial water, extracted from the Sibin River. This had an extraction facility on the banks of the Sibin River, somewhere near the current Skandia plant, connected to a transmission pipeline of over half a kilometer long. Eugene Solomon notes that there have been unconfirmed cases in which this approximation has cracked and created confusion among the employees of the Communal Enterprise, who supplied drinking water, as there was also a pipeline to carry drinking water in the area. The water appeared to the surface and disappeared, depending on the IPAS extraction schedule. Many excavations were made and in the end the defect was found in the intake of Cibin, with industrial water”, concludes the cited source.
