The history of Timisoara, told through theatrical performances and the latest technology through the Digital Culture Project Heritage Under the Spotlight

An adventure in a magical world, a journey in the labyrinth of time, the imprint of the past on a vision of the future, an x-ray through the crust of the Timisoara heritage, an afterimage of the people next to you, “a story about one of many”.

The cultural heritage of Timisoara was discovered by a large audience, in a theatrical performance, using digital technology and elements of augmented reality, which brought to the stage stories from the past that resonate in the present, in an atypical journey through the memories of the Iosefin neighborhood of yesteryear.

The theatrical performance of the first of the three events that will highlight the cultural heritage from the various neighborhoods of Timisoara was held on Tuesday, 2 August, in Piazza Moshioni in the neighborhood of Josephine, near the home of the female character who inspired the story.

The next show will take place on September 15, 2022 in the Elizabethan District.

A foray into the living world of Iosefin yesterday

The event entitled “Al-Youssefin neighborhood under the spotlight!” She brought to life the story of a female character who lived in the neighbourhood, through an encounter between past and present, and was inspired by the exhibition “Heritage under the spotlight Timisoara”. Iosefin and Valeria dr Pintea’ neighborhood, organized in 2019 by the National Museum of Banat and the Politehnica University of Timisoara, and is based on the novel Dr. Valeria Bentia. family novel (Editura Marineasa, Timișoara, 2013) by Mrs. Liana Maria Gomboșiu, Valeria’s niece. The original aspect was provided through the use of digital technology and augmented reality elements, items made by students from the “Spotlight Heritage Timișoara” project team, from the Politehnica University of Timioara.

Community participation and technology-enhanced experiences in Iosefin

The interaction within the show took place with the active participation of the audience. Spectators took part in a game made by the Spotlight Heritage Team Timișoara, in which they had to learn about visual elements from Timioara’s past. Nearly a hundred people expressed an interest in having their knowledge of the city’s cultural heritage checked, and were awarded prizes at the end that will remind them of the Spotlight Heritage Timișoara project.

This event represents the implementation team’s desire to innovate the way the city’s history and urban heritage are presented to the general public in an engaging, artistic and dynamic way, in order to facilitate cultural awareness and education, especially for the younger generations.

Through this show, the Politehnica University of Timișoara, in partnership with the National Museum of Buildings and Thespis Student Theatre, has promoted and benefited from the tangible cultural heritage of Timișoara through the artistic and digital enhancement of the historical stories and buildings in the Iosefin district, highlighting its multiculturalism, ethnic diversity, and architectural styles and historical paths, presenting stories that deserve to be continued and artistically appreciated.
